Silver and his friend Norman Woodland took the challenge. Woodland, a former Boy Scout, borrowed from Morse code: he adapted the dots and dashes into vertical lines. In 1949, they patented the “Classifying Apparatus and Method.” It was circular—a bullseye pattern—and had to be read by a 500-watt lamp. It worked, barely.
